Interested in Adopting a Shih Tzu Puppy?

There are many good reasons to buy a well-bred purebred Shih Tzu from a responsible breeder. The first is predictability. You will know whether you are getting a breed that matches what you want from a dog, rather than a puppy that grows up to be something different in size, temperament, or appearance.

Unpredictability applies to those “designer” Shih Tzu mixes or Imperial-size Shih Tzu. They may combine the worst traits, with unknown health history and qualities in the puppy involved.

If the so-called breeder doesn’t understand the AKC breed standard, they are not trying to breed Shih Tzu that are healthy and temperamentally sound. The results could be unpredictable. Most casual pet puppy breeders are driven by profit, not quality, health, or long-term homes, and will accept any buyer with a credit card or check.

Ethical breeders always screen new homes, so be prepared for questions about your home and dog-owning history. They continue to serve as knowledgeable mentors after you take your puppy home and will take back any dog they produced at any time in its life, for any reason.

Because ethical breeders spend time socializing, caring for, and observing their puppies, they match the puppy most likely to fit best into your family. They will not let you take your Shih Tzu puppy home before it is 10–12 weeks old. Each puppy will have seen a veterinarian for a well-puppy check, been microchipped, and received vaccinations up to date. Those records will accompany the puppy into its new home, along with an adoption agreement and AKC registration. Breeders also provide you with a list of what you need before you bring your puppy home. Most puppies come crate- and potty-trained and have begun to get accustomed to nail trimming, foot grooming, and coat care.

If you prefer an older dog, a breeder may have a retired show dog ready to enjoy life as a pampered pet or may refer you to a reputable local Shih Tzu rescue.

Responsible breeders do not contribute to pet overpopulation. They find homes for every animal they breed and keep track of them once they leave. They take pride in producing dogs that are healthy, friendly, playful, inquisitive, and well-adjusted, that look like Shih Tzu and respond easily to basic training. Rarely do dogs from ethical breeders end up in shelters.
